\u00a0You can see what a big difference it makes when Photoshop isn&#8217;t properly calibrated to view at print size.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Determine Your Screen Resolution And Fix It<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0<em><strong>Measure your laptop\/pc screen horizontally in inches<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Just the screen itself. \u00a0For example, on my Macbook Air the horizontal \u00a0measurement is 11.25&#8243; across.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/measurescreen-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"measurescreen\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/measurescreen-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/measurescreen-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/measurescreen-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/measurescreen.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0Make sure monitor is in native resolution. \u00a0On most PC&#8217;s you can right click on the desktop to get to display settings and on the Mac you can go to Apple Icon (upper left) &#8212; About This Mac &#8212; More Info. \u00a0This will display your screen resolution in pixels (image 1). \u00a0On my Macbook Air you can see the screen resolution is 1440&#215;900 and if you click Display Preferences on that screen you can change the screen resolution. \u00a0You want to leave it in its native default resolution which is &#8220;Best For Display&#8221; or 1440&#215;900.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/resinfomac.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/resinfomac.png 580w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/resinfomac-300x220.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3052\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/mac_bestfordisplay.png\" alt=\"mac_bestfordisplay\" width=\"400\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/mac_bestfordisplay.png 662w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/mac_bestfordisplay-300x175.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0<em><strong>Now do the math.<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0Now that you know the length of your screen horizontally in inches (in this case 11.25&#8243;) and the number of pixels horizontally (always first number in pixel dimension so in this case 1440) to determine your screen PPI or pixels per inch.<\/p>\n<p>So divide 1440 pixels \/ 11.25 inches = \u00a0128 pixels\/inch (PPI).<\/p>\n<p>4. \u00a0<em><strong>Update PPI setting in Photoshop<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Heading down the home stretch here .. Find your &#8220;Units &amp; Rulers&#8221; section. \u00a0Depending on your version and whether you&#8217;re on a PC or Mac it will either be under Photoshop &#8211; Preferences or Edit &#8211; Preferences. \u00a0You will see the screen below or something very similar. Next to &#8220;Screen Resolution&#8221; simply put in the PPI you just calculated for your monitor which in my case was 128. \u00a0Hit save and you&#8217;re done!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3055\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/ps_changeppi.png\" alt=\"ps_changeppi\" width=\"700\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/ps_changeppi.png 1005w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/ps_changeppi-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. \u00a0<b><i>Open a photo in Photoshop if you don&#8217;t already have one there.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>5. \u00a0<em><strong>Change your print size and view at print size<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0To view the current print size and\/or change it just go to Image &#8212; Image Size and make sure it&#8217;s in inches as shown in the below screenshot. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>You can change to<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>the print size you want then go to View &#8211; Print Size and it will zoom in so you can see how the image will look at actual print size.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3057\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_changeprintsize.png\" alt=\"PS_changeprintsize\" width=\"700\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_changeprintsize.png 676w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_changeprintsize-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. \u00a0<em><strong>Verify everything is correct.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t see the Ruler at the top, enable it by going to View &#8211; Rulers and selecting it. \u00a0If everything is setup properly (and you are viewing at print size), the ruler you have there in photoshop should represent a real inch. Get a ruler or tape measure and make sure and inch is an inch! \u00a0If so, well done! Now you can begin viewing all your photos at actual print size in any print size.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3056\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_rulerenable-1024x543.png\" alt=\"PS_rulerenable\" width=\"700\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_rulerenable-1024x543.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_rulerenable-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/PS_rulerenable.png 1211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. \u00a0<em><strong>Generally speaking how large can I print?<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0That&#8217;s a question we get several times a day and it&#8217;s not an easy answer since there are quite a few\u00a0variables involved, the most important being the quality of the camera. \u00a0It&#8217;s also important to know that artificially resizing an image in Photoshop will not improve print quality much if at all (at least not that the eye can see). \u00a0 What matters are the native pixels off the camera. \u00a0Taking this image as an example and assuming the native pixel dimension is 2722&#215;1102 (which it is), we&#8217;ll start viewing the print at 100 PPI to see how it looks. \u00a0So in this case about 27&#215;11&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p>It was taken with a quality camera and I see it looks really good at 27&#215;11&#8243; so I&#8217;ll go another 5&#8243; or so to 32&#215;13&#8243; and it still looks real sharp at 85 PPI. \u00a0This is typically about where we might see resolution issues even with quality cameras. \u00a0However,\u00a0this particular image enlarges really well and can be printed at high quality at 37 &#8211; 40&#8243; even though PPI is quite low around 70. \u00a0Here is a screenshot showing a portion of the image at 40&#215;16. \u00a0It&#8217;s unusual to print at PPI below 85 or so, but the point is that the quality of the camera is huge. \u00a0You won&#8217;t be printing most iPhone photos below 100 PPI.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3058\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/40x16printsize-1024x598.png\" alt=\"40x16printsize\" width=\"700\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/40x16printsize-1024x598.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/40x16printsize-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bumblejax.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/40x16printsize.png 1205w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8. \u00a0<em><strong>Don&#8217;t degrade your images &#8211; edit as RAW or TIFF<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0Be sure to do all your editing as RAW or TIFF and only make a final save as a JPEG. \u00a0JPEG&#8217;s are great because they&#8217;re easier to move around (much smaller file = faster upload to us!) and there is no visible loss in quality when printing. \u00a0Just remember that only the final save should be as JPEG since each edit and save as a JPEG will degrade the quality of the image. \u00a0.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please note we can not offer any support related to this article unless you are a customer of ours or have a project with us in the works.\u00a0 You&#8217;re welcome to post a comment and we will at times respond to those.\u00a0 Thank you for understanding.
